Race day is approaching, and whether it’s your first RunDisney event or you’re a seasoned runner, there are a few key things to keep in mind to ensure you’re fully prepared. As a past RunDisney participant, we’ve learned a lot about what works, what doesn’t, and how to make the most of the experience. Here’s a collection of our best tips to help you gear up for an unforgettable race.

Training for a RunDisney Event

Training for a RunDisney race can be a unique experience, especially with the excitement of running through Disney parks! But at its core, it’s still a race, and preparation is key.

1. Follow a Structured Training Plan

Regardless of the race—whether it’s a 5K, 10K, Half, or Full Marathon—it’s important to have a consistent training routine that includes long runs, speed work, and rest days. Programs like Jeff Galloway’s RunDisney training plans are great resources and are tailored for all race levels.

2. Simulate the Disney Course

If possible, incorporate elements into your training that reflect the Disney race experience. For instance, practice running at dawn, as RunDisney races start early in the morning. This will help your body adjust to running at that time. If you live near a park or track, include looped circuits to prepare for course turns.

3. Incorporate Walking Intervals

RunDisney races are known for their fun atmosphere and the opportunity to stop for photos with characters. Even experienced runners often use a run/walk method to pace themselves and enjoy the race more. Practice incorporating walking intervals into your training to ensure you’re comfortable with the transition.

What to Pack for Race Day

Packing the right gear is crucial for a smooth race day. Here’s a checklist of essentials:

Race Day Outfit: Comfortable, moisture-wicking clothes (and don’t forget your RunDisney costume if you’re dressing up!)

Running Shoes: Stick with the shoes you’ve trained in—never wear brand new shoes on race day!

Sunscreen: Even with early starts, the Florida and California sun can be strong by mid-morning.

Hydration Belt or Handheld Water Bottle: While there are water stations, having your own hydration is a good backup.

Energy Gels or Snacks: Keep your energy levels up with gels, gummies, or bars that you’ve tested during training.

Throwaway Layers: Mornings can be cool, so bring an old sweatshirt to keep warm before the race starts. You can toss it once the race begins.

Mental Preparation for Race Day

Race day is as much a mental game as it is a physical one. Here’s how to mentally prepare for your RunDisney experience:

1. Visualize Your Success

Picture yourself crossing the finish line, enjoying the course, and having a great time. Positive visualization can reduce pre-race jitters and set the tone for a successful day.

2. Focus on Fun, Not Just Time

RunDisney is all about the experience. With the excitement of running through the parks, seeing characters, and enjoying the energy of the crowd, it’s easy to forget you’re running a race. Don’t get too hung up on your time—soak in the magic of the event.

3. Have a Pre-Race Routine

Create a pre-race ritual to get you in the right mindset. Whether it’s listening to your favorite playlist, meditating, or doing a light warm-up, stick with what calms your nerves and boosts your confidence.

Hydration, Nutrition, and Adjusting to Disney’s Race Courses

Staying fueled and hydrated during your race is crucial, especially with the unique aspects of Disney’s courses.

1. Hydrate Early and Often

Start hydrating the day before your race and continue sipping water throughout race morning. Florida and California’s climates can be humid, even early in the morning, so it’s easy to get dehydrated quickly.

2. Eat a Familiar Pre-Race Breakfast

Stick with foods you know sit well with your stomach—race day is not the time to experiment with new meals. Bananas, oatmeal, or toast with peanut butter are common pre-race favorites.

3. Be Ready for Surprises on the Course

RunDisney courses are known for some surprises—whether it’s characters waiting for photo ops, marching bands, or even running through Cinderella Castle. Embrace these moments, but also be mindful of course bottlenecks that can slow you down. Incorporating a walk/run strategy is key to navigating these race obstacles.
