One of the most exciting—and important—decisions you’ll make when planning your river cruise is choosing your stateroom. And when you’re sailing through the twinkling Christmas Markets of Europe, your room isn’t just where you sleep—it’s your front-row seat to the magic of the Rhine.

Each of these river cruise ships offers multiple stateroom categories, all designed with comfort and luxury in mind—but with a limited number of rooms on board (just around 78 staterooms total), it’s essential to book early to secure the stateroom that’s right for you.

Let’s break down what you can expect from the AmaWaterways stateroom categories aboard the ships that could sail our 2027 Christmas Markets River Cruise.

Fixed Window Staterooms (Category E & D)

Let’s be honest: while these are the most budget-friendly category, they lack the open-air experience that makes a river cruise so special. These staterooms, located on the Piano Deck, feature small fixed windows that don’t open and are located at waterline level—so views are minimal.

• Approx. 160 sq. ft.

• No balcony or fresh-air access

• Best suited for travelers who truly won’t spend time in the room (and who aren’t joining us on this voyage—we won’t be offering this category for our 2027 cruise)

If you want to fully enjoy the scenery, spirit, and sparkle of the Christmas Markets, we recommend looking at one of the higher categories below.

French Balcony Staterooms (Category C & CA)

These elegant rooms feature floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open to let in fresh air, giving you that immersive river cruise experience—without the step-out balcony.

• Approx. 170 sq. ft.

• Great views, even in colder weather

• Located on upper decks for better scenery

• Ideal for travelers who want upgraded comfort and ambiance without going full balcony

Twin Balcony Staterooms (Categories BB, BA, AB, AA, AA+, SB, SA)

The best of both worlds: AmaWaterways’ signature twin balcony layout includes both a French balcony and a step-out balcony in one room! You can enjoy the view no matter the weather.

• Approx. 210–290 sq. ft.

• Private outdoor seating area PLUS indoor panoramic glass

• Available mid-ship and on higher decks for optimal river views

• Perfect for couples, photographers, or anyone who wants a cozy place to soak in the seasonal charm

Suites (Category SS)

For the ultimate river cruise experience, nothing beats an AmaWaterways Suite. With expanded living space, marble-clad bathrooms, and both balconies, it’s a splurge that pays off in comfort, relaxation, and style.

• Approx. 300–350+ sq. ft.

• King-sized bed, large seating area, full twin balconies

• Luxurious bath with tub and separate shower

• Great for special occasions or travelers who want a retreat onboard

Why You Shouldn’t Wait to Book

Unlike ocean cruises that carry thousands of guests, AmaWaterways ships hold fewer than 160 passengers, and many stateroom categories have only a handful of rooms available.

For example:

• Some twin balcony categories may have just 4–6 rooms per ship

• Suites? Often only 3–4 per sailing

• Even the French Balcony staterooms book up quickly—especially during the holiday season

These rooms will fill up fast, and when they’re gone… they’re gone. Booking early not only locks in your preferred stateroom, but also gives you the best pricing and most flexibility.
