One of the biggest misconceptions about planning a vacation is that spending more automatically leads to a better experience.

Sometimes that’s true.

Often, it isn’t.

Over the years, we’ve learned that the best vacations aren’t necessarily the most expensive ones. They’re the ones where travelers invest in the things that genuinely improve the experience while skipping upgrades that don’t match how they like to travel.

That’s why we rarely tell clients to simply “upgrade everything.”

Instead, we help them decide where their travel budget will have the biggest impact.

Here are a few places where we often recommend spending a little more, and a few where we encourage travelers to think twice.

Spend More On: Nonstop Flights

If we could recommend one upgrade that benefits almost every traveler, this would probably be it.

A nonstop flight isn’t glamorous.

You don’t get a bigger seat.

You don’t receive better food.

But what you do get is something many travelers appreciate even more:

Less stress.

Nonstop flights often mean:

  • fewer opportunities for delays
  • fewer missed connections
  • less chance of lost luggage
  • shorter travel days
  • a smoother start to the vacation

Especially for cruises and international travel, reducing the number of moving parts can make a significant difference.

Sometimes convenience is the best luxury.

Spend More On: The Right Resort Location

Many travelers compare resorts by room category, amenities, or price.

Those things certainly matter.

But one factor often has an even bigger impact on the vacation:

Location.

Being closer to:

  • the beach
  • restaurants
  • transportation
  • attractions
  • resort amenities

can dramatically improve the overall experience.

Saving a little money on a resort isn’t always a bargain if you spend the entire vacation wishing you were somewhere else.

Spend More On: Balcony Cabins…Sometimes

We get asked this question all the time.

“Is a balcony worth it?”

Our answer is always the same:

It depends.

For itineraries like Alaska or scenic river cruises, we often think the answer is yes.

Watching glaciers drift by from your own private balcony or enjoying changing European scenery from your cabin can become some of the most memorable moments of the trip.

On shorter, port-intensive sailings where you’re rarely in your room?

Maybe not.

The itinerary should determine the upgrade.

Spend More On: Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is one of those purchases that many travelers hope they’ll never use.

And honestly, that’s the ideal outcome.

But unexpected things happen.

Flights are delayed.

Medical emergencies occur.

Weather interrupts plans.

Luggage gets delayed.

Travel insurance isn’t exciting.

It doesn’t make the vacation more luxurious.

It simply helps protect the investment you’ve already made.

For many trips, that’s money well spent.

Spend More On: A Pre-Cruise Hotel Stay

This is another upgrade that often removes stress instead of adding luxury.

Arriving the day before your cruise means:

  • no worrying about same-day flight delays
  • time to recover from travel
  • a relaxed embarkation morning
  • the opportunity to explore a new city

We’ve seen firsthand how much peace of mind this provides.

Especially for travelers flying long distances, it can be one of the smartest investments they make.

Where We Usually DON’T Recommend Spending More

Just because something costs more doesn’t mean it’s the best value.

Here are a few upgrades we encourage travelers to evaluate carefully.

Oversized Suites

If you’re someone who plans to spend most of the day exploring destinations, relaxing by the pool, or enjoying the ship, an enormous suite may not dramatically improve your vacation.

For some travelers, absolutely.

For many others, that money could create more value elsewhere.

Premium Drink Packages

For some travelers, these packages are fantastic.

For others, they end up paying for far more than they actually use.

Rather than assuming everyone should purchase one, we prefer to look at how each traveler vacations before recommending it.

Expensive Excursions Every Day

It’s tempting to schedule every hour of a vacation.

After all, you want to see everything.

But some of the best travel memories happen when there isn’t an agenda.

Relaxing by the pool.

Wandering through a small European town.

Watching the sunset from your balcony.

Leaving room to simply enjoy the destination is often just as valuable as another excursion.

Upgrades That Don’t Match Your Travel Style

Perhaps the biggest lesson we’ve learned over the years is this:

There is no universal “best” vacation.

The best vacation is the one that’s designed around you.

Some travelers value:

  • luxury accommodations

Others value:

  • more destinations

Some prioritize:

  • convenience

Others prioritize:

  • unique experiences

That’s why we don’t believe in recommending upgrades simply because they’re available.

We recommend them when they’ll genuinely improve your vacation.

The Bottom Line

Smart travel planning isn’t about spending the most money.

It’s about spending where it matters.

Some upgrades can completely change the vacation experience.

Others simply add cost without adding much value.

The key is understanding the difference before you book.

If you’re planning your next vacation and wondering where your travel budget will make the biggest impact, we’d love to help you make those decisions with confidence.

After all, better vacations aren’t always built by spending more.

They’re built by spending smarter.
