There is no getting around it: Disney Cruise Line can cost considerably more than other cruise options.
Put two similar-length cruises side by side, and you may find yourself wondering why you should spend the extra money to sail with Disney when another cruise line can take you to many of the same destinations for less.
It’s a fair question.
Having sailed Disney Cruise Line ourselves many times, along with several other cruise lines, our answer is:
Yes, Disney Cruise Line can absolutely be worth the higher price, but it is not the right choice for every traveler.
The value comes down to what matters to you on vacation, what you expect from your cruise experience, and whether the things Disney does differently are things you will actually appreciate.
Here’s what we believe you’re paying for.
1. Disney’s Service Is a Major Part of the Experience
If we had to choose one reason we’re willing to pay more to sail Disney Cruise Line, service would be at the top of the list.
Disney has built its reputation around customer service on land, and that carries over to its ships.
From your stateroom host to your dining team, you’ll interact with many of the same Crew Members throughout your vacation. That consistency gives them an opportunity to get to know you rather than making every interaction feel transactional.
It can be the little things that make the biggest impression.
Your dining team may remember what you like to drink. Your stateroom host gets to know your family’s routine. Crew Members throughout the ship are consistently friendly and attentive.
No cruise line is perfect, and experiences can always vary from one sailing to another. But across our Disney cruises, the level and consistency of service continues to be one of the things that brings us back.
2. The Cleanliness and Condition of the Ships Are Magnificent
This one matters tremendously to us.
Disney’s ships are exceptionally well maintained.
You will routinely see Crew Members cleaning, painting, polishing and maintaining different areas of the ship. Even aboard Disney’s older vessels, Disney puts considerable effort into keeping the ships looking their best.
That doesn’t mean you’ll never find a scratch or see signs that thousands of people vacation aboard these ships every week. You will.
But the overall standard of cleanliness and maintenance is impressive.
When you’re spending thousands of dollars on a vacation, those details matter. We want to feel comfortable with the environment we’re spending our week in, and Disney consistently delivers in this area.
3. Rotational Dining Is Completely Different
This is one of the Disney Cruise Line concepts that can be difficult to fully appreciate until you’ve experienced it.
Instead of having one main dining room for the entire cruise, Disney uses rotational dining.
Each evening, your family rotates to a different main dining restaurant aboard the ship. Depending on your ship, those restaurants can range from immersive theatrical experiences to elegant dining rooms celebrating Disney and animation history.
But here’s the important part:
Your dining team rotates with you.
Your servers aren’t changing every night. They follow you from restaurant to restaurant.
By the second or third evening, they may already know what you like to drink, dietary preferences you’ve discussed, how your children like their meals, or that you enjoy coffee after dinner.
It combines variety with consistency.
And on Disney Cruise Line’s newer ships, dinner can become part of the entertainment itself.
Depending on the ship, you might experience Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure, Plaza de Coco, Pride Lands: Feast of The Lion King, or one of Disney’s interactive Marvel dining experiences.
You’re not simply going somewhere to eat dinner. On many evenings, dinner is one of the activities.
4. The Entertainment Is on Another Level
We’ve experienced entertainment across multiple cruise lines, and this is an area where we believe Disney has a significant advantage.
Disney’s Broadway-style theatrical productions are exceptional.
These aren’t simply cruise ship variety shows with a Disney name attached to them. Disney has the intellectual property, music, characters, performers, technology and production resources to create theatrical experiences based on stories guests already know and love.
Depending on your ship, you may see productions based on Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Hercules and other Disney stories.
And because these shows are included in your cruise fare, your family can experience high-quality theatrical entertainment without purchasing another ticket.
If your family loves live theater and Disney storytelling, this can be a significant part of the value equation.
5. Disney Knows How to Cruise With Kids
There’s no pretending otherwise:
There will be children on a Disney Cruise.
If you’re looking for an adults-only environment where you rarely encounter children, this probably isn’t the cruise line for you.
But Disney is exceptionally good at designing vacations for families.
The youth spaces go far beyond simply giving children somewhere to play while their parents have dinner.
Disney’s Oceaneer Club can include incredibly immersive spaces themed around Marvel, Star Wars, princesses, Imagineering and other Disney stories, depending on the ship.
Characters may become part of the experience, and activities are designed around different interests rather than simply putting every child into one large playroom.
For families, having children who are genuinely excited about spending time in the kids clubs can also create something valuable for the adults:
Time to enjoy the ship on their own.
6. Yes, Adults Can Absolutely Enjoy Disney Cruise Line Without Kids
We know this firsthand because we do it all the time.
You do not need children to enjoy Disney Cruise Line.
But you do need the right expectations.
There are going to be kids onboard. You’ll see families in the restaurants, theaters, elevators, hallways and around the pools.
At the same time, Disney deliberately creates areas of its ships specifically for adults.
Depending on the ship, you’ll find adult-only pools and outdoor areas, lounges, nightlife, coffee shops and premium dining experiences such as Palo, Palo Steakhouse, Remy and Enchanté.
Then there are adult-exclusive areas at Disney’s island destinations, including Serenity Bay.
We’ve had plenty of Disney cruises without children and thoroughly enjoyed them.
The distinction is simple:
Disney Cruise Line can be great for adults without kids. It isn’t a cruise line for adults who don’t want kids anywhere around them.
Those are two very different things.
7. Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay Can Be Worth the Trip Themselves
We aren’t exaggerating when we say this:
We will choose a Disney cruise specifically because of Disney’s private island destinations.
That’s how much we enjoy them.
Disney Castaway Cay has been one of the signature Disney Cruise Line experiences for years, with beautiful beaches, activities, included food, family areas and the adults-only Serenity Bay.
Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point provides a very different experience, with gorgeous Bahamian water, expansive beaches and a much stronger emphasis on the culture of The Bahamas.
We’ve now experienced both, and these aren’t destinations we view as filler stops between other Caribbean ports.
They’re destinations we actively want on our itinerary.
In fact, when comparing Disney Cruise Line sailings, whether an itinerary visits Castaway Cay, Lookout Cay, or potentially both can absolutely influence which sailing we recommend.
8. Disney Ships Are Designed With Families in Mind
Disney does a lot of little things aboard its ships that become much more noticeable once you’re actually living in your stateroom for several days.
One of the best examples is the split bathroom design found in many Disney staterooms.
Rather than having one small cruise ship bathroom, many staterooms divide the facilities between two spaces. This allows one person to shower while someone else uses the other bathroom area.
That can make getting ready considerably easier for families.
You’ll also find thoughtful storage, Disney’s elevated beds that provide space underneath for luggage, privacy curtains in many staterooms, and layouts designed around how families actually use the room.
Throughout the ship, Disney’s attention to detail is everywhere.
You can rush from one activity to another and miss much of it, or slow down and start noticing just how much thought went into the design.
9. More Is Included Than Some Travelers Realize
Disney Cruise Line isn’t all-inclusive, and there are certainly plenty of opportunities to spend additional money onboard.
Specialty dining, alcoholic beverages, specialty coffees, spa treatments, excursions and other experiences can cost extra.
However, Disney includes quite a bit in the cruise fare.
Your main dining meals, quick-service food, Broadway-style shows, character experiences, youth clubs, many onboard activities, soft drinks from designated beverage stations and at meals, and standard room service selections are among the experiences typically included.
This doesn’t automatically make Disney less expensive than another cruise line. In many cases, it won’t.
But when comparing prices, make sure you’re comparing the vacations, not simply the number displayed on the initial booking screen.
So Why Does Disney Cruise Line Cost So Much?
Part of the answer is simple:
Demand.
Disney has an enormously loyal audience, a limited number of ships compared with some of the world’s largest cruise lines, and experiences people are willing to pay more to enjoy.
You’re also paying for Disney’s intellectual property, entertainment, themed environments, service standards, ship maintenance and unique destinations.
None of that means you should blindly pay whatever Disney charges.
There is a point where price matters.
And that’s where good vacation planning becomes particularly important.
Disney Cruise Line Can Be a Budget Killer If You Wait Too Long
If you’re primarily a budget-conscious traveler, Disney Cruise Line requires some careful planning.
Waiting until you suddenly decide you want to take a Disney cruise in the next few months can result in sticker shock, particularly during popular travel periods.
Our preference is to begin planning well in advance.
That can give you access to better stateroom availability, more itinerary choices and, depending on the sailing, better pricing than waiting until the ship begins filling.
It also gives you something equally important:
Time to budget for the vacation.
Instead of trying to absorb the cost of a Disney Cruise all at once, planning ahead allows you to understand the total vacation cost and prepare for it over time.
If someone comes to us looking for an inexpensive cruise leaving soon, Disney Cruise Line may simply not be the recommendation we make.
Setting realistic expectations is more important than forcing Disney to fit every vacation.
Who Probably Shouldn’t Pay More for Disney Cruise Line?
Disney isn’t the answer for everyone, and that’s okay.
We would think twice about recommending Disney Cruise Line if:
- You don’t particularly enjoy Disney.
- Your primary goal is finding the least expensive cruise possible.
- You want a casino onboard.
- You’re looking for a heavy late-night party atmosphere.
- You want to vacation primarily around other adults.
- You’re going to be frustrated simply because children are onboard.
- The Disney characters, entertainment and storytelling don’t add meaningful value for you.
There are excellent cruise lines that may be a much better fit for those travelers.
The goal shouldn’t be to convince everyone to sail Disney.
The goal should be to choose the cruise line that matches how you actually want to vacation.
So, Is Disney Cruise Line Worth the Higher Price?
For the right traveler, yes.
We continue sailing Disney Cruise Line because we value the exceptional service, magnificent cleanliness and maintenance of the ships, Broadway-quality entertainment, rotational dining, adult spaces, Disney storytelling and private destinations.
Those things matter to us.
But we’d never tell someone that Disney is automatically worth paying more for simply because it’s Disney.
If you’re going to spend the additional money, you should understand exactly what you’re getting for it and determine whether those experiences matter to you.
For a family that loves Disney, values exceptional service, appreciates great entertainment and wants the type of vacation Disney Cruise Line provides, the higher price can absolutely be worthwhile.
For someone whose priorities are completely different?
There may be a better cruise waiting for you somewhere else.
And that’s perfectly fine.
