How to Choose the Right Cruise Line for Your Vacation Style
Ask a group of experienced cruisers which cruise line is the best, and you’ll probably get a different answer from everyone. One person might rave about the entertainment and activities aboard a Royal Caribbean ship. Another may love the sophisticated atmosphere of Celebrity Cruises. A family might insist there’s nothing quite like Disney Cruise Line, while someone else couldn’t imagine giving up the adults-only experience of Virgin Voyages.
Here’s the interesting part: They could all be right.
The truth is, there’s no single cruise line that’s perfect for everyone. What makes a vacation unforgettable for one traveler might be exactly what another traveler wants to avoid.
At Dapper Dreams Travel By The Geddings, we don’t start by asking which cruise line is the most popular. We start by learning what kind of vacation you want to experience.
Because finding the right cruise isn’t about choosing the biggest ship, the newest attraction, or the lowest advertised price. It’s about finding the right combination of cruise line, ship, itinerary, atmosphere, and value for the way you like to travel.
Here’s how we approach that decision.

1. Who’s Traveling With You?
One of the first things we consider when helping clients choose a cruise is who’s coming along.
A family with elementary-school children will probably have different priorities from a couple celebrating their 25th anniversary. A group of friends looking for an energetic getaway may want something completely different from grandparents traveling with children and grandchildren.
And those differences matter.
Families with younger children may appreciate supervised kids’ clubs, splash areas, family entertainment, flexible dining, and stateroom configurations that make traveling together easier.
Families with teenagers might be more interested in waterslides, sports activities, teen spaces, exciting shows, and enough freedom for everyone to enjoy themselves.
Couples may prioritize specialty dining, adults-only spaces, relaxing pools, beautiful accommodations, and opportunities to spend quality time together.
Multigenerational groups often need a ship with enough variety to keep everyone happy, from younger children to grandparents, while still providing opportunities to enjoy experiences together.
And for adults traveling without children, the atmosphere can be especially important. Some enjoy the energy of a family-friendly ship, while others prefer an adults-only environment.
This is why we don’t automatically recommend the same cruise line to every family or every couple.
A cruise ship might offer fantastic activities for children but lack the relaxed atmosphere the adults are hoping for. Another ship might provide beautiful accommodations and exceptional dining but fewer activities for younger travelers.
The right cruise needs to work for the people taking the vacation, not just look impressive in the brochure.

2. Is the Ship the Vacation, or Is It About the Destinations?
Here’s a question we love asking travelers:
Are you cruising primarily for the ship, or for the places the ship will take you?
There’s no wrong answer, but your response can dramatically change which cruise we recommend.
When the ship is the destination
For some travelers, the ship itself is the main attraction.
They want impressive pools, exciting entertainment, great restaurants, nightlife, and plenty of things to do throughout the day.
They may even prefer an itinerary with more sea days because those days provide additional time to enjoy everything onboard.
On these vacations, the ports are a bonus. The ship is where much of the excitement happens.
When the destinations are the priority
Other travelers approach cruising from a completely different perspective.
They’re dreaming about exploring historic European cities, watching glaciers calve in Alaska, discovering Caribbean islands, or experiencing cultures they’ve never encountered before.
For these travelers, the ship is a comfortable way to travel between destinations, unpacking once while waking up somewhere new.
The itinerary, time in port, available excursions, and overall destination experience may matter more than whether the ship has the newest onboard attractions.
What if you want both?
Many travelers do!
And that’s where thoughtful cruise planning becomes especially valuable.
A wonderful itinerary aboard a ship that doesn’t match your preferences can leave you disappointed. Likewise, an incredible ship sailing to destinations that don’t interest you might not deliver the vacation you envisioned.
We believe the ship and itinerary should complement each other, not compete with each other.

3. What Does Your Perfect Day at Sea Look Like?
Imagine waking up aboard your cruise ship with an entire day at sea ahead of you.
No excursions to catch. No ports to explore. Just a full day to enjoy the ship.
What would you want to do?
Your answer tells us quite a bit about your cruising personality.
The Foodie
For some travelers, dining is one of the highlights of the entire vacation.
They look forward to beautifully prepared meals, interesting menus, specialty restaurants, creative cocktails, and trying something new every evening.
When evaluating ships for these travelers, we consider restaurant variety, dining quality, reservation policies, what’s included in the fare, and whether specialty dining comes at an additional cost.
The Entertainment Enthusiast
Some travelers love having something exciting to look forward to every evening.
They might enjoy large-scale theater productions, live music, comedy, themed parties, lounges, and vibrant nightlife.
For them, entertainment isn’t simply something to do after dinner. It’s a major part of the cruise experience.
The Adventure Seeker
These travelers aren’t necessarily looking to spend their vacation sitting by a pool.
They’re interested in onboard activities, waterslides, sports facilities, interactive attractions, and memorable adventures ashore.
For an adventure-focused traveler, both the ship’s amenities and the itinerary’s excursion opportunities deserve attention.
The Relaxation Lover
For others, the perfect day at sea involves very little planning.
A comfortable lounger, a quiet pool, a visit to the spa, a good book, or simply watching the ocean from a private balcony might be exactly what they need.
When relaxation is the priority, we pay particular attention to ship atmosphere, passenger capacity, quiet spaces, and accommodation options.
The Destination Explorer
Some travelers enjoy sea days, but their favorite moments happen ashore.
They’re interested in history, culture, food, architecture, wildlife, and discovering places they’ve never visited.
For these travelers, itinerary quality, port times, overnight stays, and excursion options can be deciding factors.
The Family Cruiser
Family-focused travelers often need a little bit of everything.
They may want supervised activities for the children, entertainment everyone can enjoy together, flexible dining, and enough variety for different ages and interests.
The goal isn’t necessarily finding the ship with the most activities. It’s finding one with the right activities for that particular family.
And here’s something important: You don’t have to fit neatly into one category.
You might love specialty dining, enjoy a lively theater show, and still want a quiet afternoon by the pool.
Most travelers have a combination of interests. Understanding which ones matter most helps us narrow the options.

4. Understanding the Different Cruise Line Personalities
Cruise lines have different personalities, and those differences extend beyond the appearance of their ships.
Some emphasize onboard attractions and family entertainment. Others focus on dining, contemporary design, traditional cruising, or destination immersion.
Here’s a look at several cruise lines we regularly help travelers explore.
Royal Caribbean International
Royal Caribbean is particularly well known for its activity-rich ships, impressive entertainment, and variety of onboard attractions.
Depending on the ship, travelers may find waterslides, surf simulators, neighborhood-style spaces, spectacular shows, and numerous dining venues.
It’s often worth considering for families, multigenerational groups, and travelers who want plenty happening onboard.
However, a smaller Royal Caribbean ship can offer a substantially different experience from one of its newest megaships.
Disney Cruise Line
Disney Cruise Line combines the cruising experience with Disney storytelling, themed entertainment, character experiences, and family-focused activities.
What some travelers don’t realize is that Disney also offers dedicated adult spaces, specialty dining experiences, and opportunities for couples to relax.
It’s a natural consideration for families who love Disney, but it’s not exclusively for families with young children.
Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity Cruises is known for its modern design, elevated dining, comfortable accommodations, and a generally more relaxed onboard atmosphere.
We’ve enjoyed experiencing Celebrity firsthand, including our recent Alaska sailing aboard Celebrity Edge.
One of the things we appreciate about Celebrity is how the onboard experience can complement a destination-focused itinerary while still offering plenty to enjoy during sea days.
Celebrity’s different ship classes also provide distinct experiences, making the specific ship an important part of the decision.
Princess Cruises
Princess Cruises offers a more traditional style of cruising, with an emphasis on destinations, dining, entertainment, and a comfortable onboard atmosphere.
Princess is particularly well known for Alaska cruising, but its itineraries extend around the world.
It’s a cruise line we often consider when travelers want a balance between onboard comfort and memorable destinations.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line emphasizes flexibility, particularly around dining and how guests structure their time onboard.
Depending on the ship, travelers can enjoy varied restaurants, entertainment, nightlife, and an assortment of activities.
Norwegian can appeal to families, couples, and groups who appreciate having choices rather than following a highly structured vacation schedule.
Virgin Voyages
Virgin Voyages takes a distinctly different approach to cruising.
Its adults-only ships feature contemporary design, a lively social atmosphere, varied dining concepts, and entertainment that feels different from the traditional cruise experience.
With dining at its included restaurants and a more casual approach to onboard scheduling, Virgin can be especially appealing to adults looking for something outside the conventional cruise format.
Viking Ocean Cruises
Viking Ocean Cruises offers an adults-only experience centered on destination exploration, cultural enrichment, understated elegance, and a quieter onboard environment.
Rather than emphasizing waterslides and large-scale attractions, Viking focuses on comfortable ships, thoughtful amenities, and meaningful experiences ashore.
It can be an excellent consideration for travelers who view cruising as a way to explore the world.
Why we don’t rank these cruise lines
It’s tempting to turn this into a list of winners and losers, but that misses the point.
Each cruise line offers something different, and even ships within the same fleet can vary significantly.
A couple who loves Virgin Voyages might also enjoy Celebrity. A family that has always sailed Disney may find Royal Caribbean appealing as their children get older. Someone who enjoys Princess might appreciate Viking for a more destination-focused vacation.
The goal isn’t to be loyal to one cruise line at all costs. It’s to choose the experience that makes the most sense for your next vacation.

5. Understanding Your Budget and What’s Actually Included
Cruise pricing can be confusing, especially when you’re comparing different cruise lines.
You might find two cruises visiting similar destinations, departing around the same time, and offering comparable stateroom categories, yet one appears significantly less expensive.
Does that automatically make it the better value?
Not necessarily.
The advertised cruise fare is only part of the financial picture.
Depending on the cruise line, fare package, and promotion, you may need to consider additional expenses such as:
– Specialty dining and beverage packages
– Wi-Fi access
– Daily gratuities or service charges
– Shore excursions
– Spa services and premium onboard activities
– Travel insurance
– Flights, transfers, and pre- or post-cruise hotels
Different cruise lines structure their pricing differently. Some include more amenities in the base fare, while others allow guests to purchase the extras they want.
Neither approach is automatically better.
For example, someone who rarely drinks alcohol may not benefit from paying extra for a beverage-inclusive package. Meanwhile, travelers who enjoy specialty dining and premium drinks may find a more inclusive fare offers better overall value.
We also consider the stateroom itself.
A lower fare for an interior cabin might be perfectly appropriate for travelers who plan to spend very little time in their room. But someone who loves relaxing on a private balcony may consider that upgrade an essential part of the vacation.
When comparing options for our clients, we look beyond the starting price to evaluate the overall vacation experience and expected total cost.
Sometimes the least expensive cruise is the right choice.
Other times, spending a little more delivers substantially greater value.

6. The Cruise Line Matters, but So Does the Ship
Here’s something that surprises many travelers: two ships belonging to the same cruise line can deliver very different vacations.
A newer ship might feature multiple specialty restaurants, innovative entertainment venues, elaborate pool areas, and attractions that aren’t available aboard older ships in the fleet.
A smaller vessel may offer fewer onboard activities but provide a more intimate atmosphere, easier navigation, and access to certain ports that larger ships cannot visit.
Neither experience is inherently superior.
It comes down to what you’re looking for.
Bigger isn’t always better
Larger ships can offer incredible variety, making them attractive to travelers who enjoy having numerous dining, entertainment, and activity options.
But with that variety may come more passengers, busier public spaces, and the need to plan certain experiences in advance.
Smaller ships may offer a quieter atmosphere and a more traditional cruising experience, although they generally have fewer onboard attractions.
Newer isn’t always better, either
It’s easy to be drawn to the newest ship in a fleet.
And while new ships often introduce exciting features, an older vessel may have an itinerary you prefer, a more attractive price, or an atmosphere that’s better suited to your vacation style.
The ship’s age, refurbishment history, layout, amenities, and overall condition are all worth considering.
Don’t overlook the itinerary
Even the same ship can feel different depending on where and when it sails.
A seven-night Caribbean cruise during a school holiday may attract a different mix of passengers than a longer European itinerary outside peak vacation periods.
Sea days, port schedules, sailing length, and time of year can all influence the atmosphere onboard.
Choosing the right cruise line gets you started. Choosing the right ship and sailing brings the vacation together.

7. How We Help You Find Your Cruise Style
When someone reaches out to us about planning a cruise, we don’t immediately pull up the latest promotion and recommend whichever ship happens to be on sale.
We want to understand what they’re hoping to experience.
Sometimes that starts with a conversation about past vacations.
What did you love? What would you do differently? Have you cruised before? Are there particular experiences you want to repeat, or are you ready to try something completely new?
Other times, we begin with the basics: who’s traveling, where you’d like to go, how long you want to be away, and what budget you’re comfortable with.
From there, we can start exploring the details that really shape a vacation.
Would you rather have a ship packed with activities or somewhere quiet to unwind? Are specialty restaurants important? Do you enjoy organized entertainment? How much time do you want to spend exploring destinations?
We also look at practical considerations, including stateroom configurations, accessibility needs, departure ports, flight arrangements, and what the cruise fare actually includes.
Our firsthand experiences make a difference
One of the things we enjoy most about being travel advisors is experiencing different cruise lines and destinations ourselves.
Every sailing teaches us something new.
We get to see how ships are laid out, experience the dining and entertainment, explore the ports, and understand the little details that don’t always come across in promotional materials.
Our own cruises help us ask better questions and provide more informed recommendations.
And when a client is considering a ship or destination we haven’t personally experienced, we combine our industry resources, supplier relationships, and research to help evaluate the options.
We don’t believe every traveler should sail with our personal favorite cruise line.
We believe every traveler deserves a cruise that fits their own priorities.
